Now Ehud made himself a dagger (it was double-edged and a cubit in length) and fastened it under his clothes on his right thigh.

 

God has equipped you to win the fight!

Ehud was quite a character, an old testament judge who’s story is very entertaining!

Ehud’s sword that he made was quite small, it was a double-edged sword that attached beneath the clothing to his right leg.

The bulk of soldiers in the ancient world kept their weapons on their left legs, which made them easy to draw with ones right hand when needed quickly. Ehud however was left-handed, this allowed him to keep his blade a secret.

Ehud murdered the evil King of the Moabites ‘Eglon’ in the most bizarre of battles, it is implied (verse 20 & 24) that Eglon could well of been sat on a toilet doing his business when Ehud arrived on the scene, after Ehud had stabbed him he made his way back to Israelite territory and used the news of Eglon’s assassination to raise up an army.

Through this the Israelites defeated the king-less Moabites. They killed 10,000 Moabite warriors in the process and God’s people had their peace for about 80 years.

The interesting thing about this story is that being left handed in those days was seen as quite a disability, people who were left handed were labelled as useless, not able to work or fight in the ‘accepted’ way, a reason God has used Ehud in the Bible is to show that God will use anyone who is willing to do his work.

My thought with this verse is that maybe there is something unusual about you, something that goes against the grain, something you think people can’t accept, and you’ve been wondering if God will or wants to use you?

God wanted to use Ehud and he made a point of it. He gave him a space in history, recorded in the Bible for all time, even though he was quite different.

There are mighty God given achievements and victories that God wants you to fight and win. This may be at work, with your family or winning people to His Kingdom, we are all in the thick of at least one.  God has given everyone of us the abilities to battle through it. He knows what we need at every stage!

The first weapon we need is the sword of the spirit, which is God’s word on our mouths, when we make our confession, God’s confession, there is nothing that can stop us.
