Over the course of the last couple years I have been watching a lot of films with my son particularly now he’s old enough to watch 12 rated films, so I like to find some that have something to learn from it.
This film was one that had some good morals and a little bit of history to learn from but overall was quite a bit of boyish fun too.
A lot of critics have given this poor reviews and feel the tempo and the type of actors where misaligned. Too be honest I wasn’t paying so much concern to all that, I was enjoying an action movie that had some fun bits with my 12 year old.
Colin Firth and Ben Kingsley are great actors, so in my opinion they carried the film along well. It didn’t become the blockbuster some may of hoped for it, but its certainly going to keep a father and young son interested. I’d even of watched it with my son was 10/11.
The best aspect of the film is that there is a mission and an adventure. Of course the young heir to pharos throne is the main character of the film, the last legion are protecting him. So for a 12 year old, they can identify with that lead and imagine themselves in a similar heroic adventure. That’s the power of the movie.
A solid good vs evil battle story, there where a number if times I could point out to my son the power of honour and submission to a position / calling as the last legion gave themselves to protecting the very young leader.

So it’s well worth a watch, nice scenery too, set on thr Mediterranean coast. I think you’ll both enjoy it and your son will even come away with a visual idea of the end of the Roman empire and its impact and spread to Britannia.
