And the priest shall burn them on the altar as food, an offering made by fire for a sweet aroma; all the fat is the Lord’s.
Give the fat to God!
Fat refers to the good stuff! The rich part of the meat, today many of us cut off all the fatty parts of our chop or bacon out of fear of saturated fat, but from experience at home in Devon being from a farming family I was looked at a little odd by my grandparents when I carefully dissected the fatty bits off. They told me it was the ‘best bit’ and that ‘that won’t harm you’.
The first thought that came to my mind with this scripture was that I was right, I had been right to try and avoid the fatty food and my Grandparents were ignoring God! This however may have been a wrong interpretation! With a little bit more study I came to new conclusions.
When the Bible refers to fat God talks of prosperity. In Genesis 41, we are in thick of the story of Joseph and in particular the tragic time when Joseph was stuck in jail, he was released to interpret Pharaoh’s dream, a dream of seven fat cows. Those fat cows were a sign to them of years of plenty, prosperity and provision.
Has God given you plenty, prosperity or provision, in any area of life? (I bet He has) Like Joseph in Egypt we are to be a source of provision for others. If God has blessed you with ‘fat’ – ‘extra’ in your life it is so that you can turn around and give it back to Him. God gives to us for the benefit of others! We are never to be a dam, but a reservoir, we should always be giving out, never holding on for ourselves otherwise we will become stagnant and of no use.
Whether that giving is, time, money, energy, joy, faith, talent, whatever God has given you, you ought to give it back to God through His people, that is the surest way to be thankful for what He has given.
These things ‘the fat’ we are told belong to Him – so what can you give back to God this week? Or today? What can you give to others? Remember you are a wealthy man compared to most of God’s people in this world, we can all afford to give of what God has graciously given us.
Remember also that it is more blessed (and even rewarding) to give than receive!
So what will you give?
