2021 Reading List Review

4 minutes

I managed to read 6 books and listen to a further 7, so on average a book a month at least from what I can remember properly. I can honestly say all of these books were exceptional, I have become quite fussy with books after years of running a Christian Bookshop and having so many books at home in my collection. I have realized time is short and only read the quality. Though I would of hoped to have read more books this year – I am very happy with the ones I did and delighted with what I learnt and enjoyed from them.

PAPER BOOKS

Fatal Flaws by Hank Hanegraaff

A book I had been meaning to read for some time, such an encouraging read about how wrong and unreasonable evolution is and how it was created to undermine belief in God.

Healing the Masculine Soul by Gordon Dalbey

This probably is the favorite of the books I read this year and perhaps an all time favorite now. I love Gordons writing and his heart he has done so much to explain men’s hearts and how Jesus fixes us.

Son’s of the Father by Gordon Dalbey

After reading the first I ordered another of his work straight away. This too was a fascinating read, a great overall understanding of what it is to be a son naturally and to our heavenly father.

Maximised Manhood by Ed Cole

This is a classic! A must read. Ed Cole is a man I admire to the full. His work was phenomenal for the Lord. I reread this book for the 4th time, with a new mentoring group – it made a huge difference in one man’s life and confronted him to make some hard choices. This book moves you.

Born to Run by Christopher McDougal

I learnt some time ago how beneficial reading fiction – or at least story before bed can be fantastic for ease of sleep and even creativity. This was an enjoyable read about the benefits of running bear foot – a very elaborate way of making a few points but they were easy read fun stories that also peaked my love for world travel.

Abide in the Vine – Andrew Murrey

Wow, wow wow what a devotional read by a classic author – joint favorite book actually should be stand alone top as it was so rich in truth and helped me and helped me with a sermon I delivered about just being a branch! (www.youtube.com/watch?v=m5-mg40w3_w&t=154s)

AUDIO BOOKS

E Myth Revisited by Michael E Gerber

The first book I went through this year was actually a relisten. As a Church leader it is a very beneficial book to regularly go through to spark ideas and to measure ones organisation against.

Lectures to my Students by Charles Spurgeon

Another fascinating listen. This was about 19 hours worth of material. Many interesting topics that pertain to preaching. By an classic!

Heavenly Authority by John G Lake

This was a very encouraging and faith biuilding book that is well worth listening to. To gain further understanding of who we are in Chrsit and all that Jesus has made available to us.

Faith that Prevails by Wigglesworth

Many encouraging stories and applications of faith in another great listen.

The History of the abolition of Britain by Peter Hitchens

I had been listening to Peter Hitchens more and more this year and since the covid pandemic occurred, his take on it all is fascinating and so I had a desire to consume one of his books. This title was close to my heart, becoming more and more patriotic as I age. This book confirmed and gave detailed substance and analysis to much of what I had felt and known on partial form about the demise of this Great Kingdom and culture. Such a valuable listen. He really understands our nations plight.

Screwtape Letters by CS Lewis

Listening to this on YouTube was hilarious. I enjoyed it while painting walls at the Church. John Cleese narrates and its awesome he place the part of Screwtape the demon well. I had not read the book before, so I was so impressed by CS Lewis’s depiction of the enemy strategising against the humans love for God. He is tireless in trying to take us away. Brilliant book to read or especially listen too! Awesome classic.

Susanna Wesley by Kathy McReynolds

I managed to find on Audible (Included) a whole heap of “included” offerings so I listened to this book at times on double speed in 1 day over Christmas. It was a fascinating listen, I made a number of notes about the times, the times for the Church and about her life and endurance in general. She must have been an extraordinary women with some extraordinary children as well.

So there you have it, that was my year in books. Maybe next year will be more in quantity but quality will be hard to beat!

Let me know your thoughts – have you read any of these? What did you enjoy? And what was the best book you read this year?
